HEREOS IN ANTELOPE VALLEY

THIS IS AN EXERPT OF AN ARTICLE THAT RAN IN THE ANTELOPE VALLEY PRESS ON 07/04/2010

WOMAN RUNS DOD AND CAT RESCUE IN PEARBLOSSOM

Walking past outdoor kennels at Antelope Valley Dog an d Cat rescue in Pearblossom

79year old Vilma Drever wore a large straw hat to ward off the sun. It helps with shade but not with the heat.

“In the summer I fry and in the winter I freeze said Drever”, who founded the rescue more than a dozen years ago and purchased the 8-acre property in 1998. “But it’s hotter for the animals because they’re wearing fur coats.

Actually all the kennels have tarps for shade and they all have wading pools and or tubs of water to cool off. In. They’re all happy, they know what it’s like to have to struggle and they’re just happy not to have to struggle anymore.

Drever was nominated as a hero by kay Hopkins who wrote .” when most people in their late 60’s are relaxing and taking life easy, Vilma was rescuing abandoned animals from being dumped in the desert. Dumped and left to hopelessly fend for themselves , their only hope for survival was Vilma,

Two hip surgeries have not stopped vilma from years of relentless time consuming, frustrating, successful and rewarding rescues.

She has spent many all night vigils, and endured 6 miserable hours with another volunteer in (a) snowstorm to rescue 2 shivering dogs.

I tell everyone that I was born with a puppy under one arm and a kitten under the other.

Drever said.

Drever recounted the May rescue in Rosamond.. She received a call from a woman who was feeding a stray dog who lived under a storage container with her newborn puppies.

The mother of the puppies to get food would cross busy streets too get food from garbage cans at fast food restaurants, then brought the scraps back to the hole she dug under the container.

We used food to lure Mommy out from under the container, and with the help of several volunteers we got 2 of the puppies out. The first night.

I asked the (Kern County) Fire Department to help, but they ssaid it was private property. The next day we dug some more but we couldn’t get the babies because they were blocked by girders and skids. I called several agencies and news teams but couldn’t get any help.

Drever pleaded her case once more with the Fire Department and finally convinced them to help.

THE RESCUE OF SKELY (AKA) SKELTON DOG

On July 4th this was a lucky day for Skely !!!

Vilma had spotted him standing in the middle of Avenue Q he was in a daze just standing there as if to say I can’t take it any more he was so weak he could hardly take another step.

Vilma rushed back to the sanctuary and loaded her car with all the necessary equipment needed to rescue Skely

This Dog was so emaciated and very hungry he was captured in the trap in a very short time compared to other rescue attempts. That could take hours of sitting and waiting for them to enter the baited trap.

He was immediately taken to High Desert Animal Hospital; Vilma had called ahead so they were waiting for us to arrive.

While getting him out of the Van I managed to get a few pictures of him they were through the cage but wow you can even see his ribs through the cage

He was in the Animal Hospital for 2 days then brought back to the sanctuary

He was given shots, nutrition and a good examination

As soon as we can fatten him up he will be neutered and ready for adoption

He is a gorgeous dog only 6 months old probably born out there and the only one left of his family. He is very loving and a little shy.

If you would like to visit Skelly come on out to our rescue and watch for updates as he gains weight we will have more pictures of him on our website.

BELL AND BELLA

Belle and Bella This story began about 6 months ago….

My name is Jennifer Grieve I work in the desert in the town of Littlerock, Ca.

On my way to work one day I saw that 2 dogs a white Shepherd Mix and a Rotweiler were out in the middle of the desert they had no food ,water , or shelter It broke my heart to see that there are so many animals abandoned out in the desert of the antelope valley… Who does this? To leave an animal to starve to death dehydrate to be killed by a

Car or by a pack of coyotes. I can’t help but wonder would they do that to their own

Children. I started out throwing dog biscuits to them not knowing if they were

Staying or would somehow find their way home. When it became clear to me that there

Was no home to go to the streets had become their home. And they were pretty well starving I got gallon bottles and cut the tops off to fill them as water buckets with a rock to weight them down so they would not tip over or blow away. I filled them up every morning on my way to work and every evening on my way home. I bought a 40 lb bag of dog food to keep in my car and I began feeding them morning, evening and even the weekends. Sometimes I would see more than these 2 dogs looking for food and they would be fed too. After a while these dogs would hear my car coming and they would come out from where ever they were sleeping they would wait for me to fill the dishes with food and wait for me to leave as I drove away I could see them in my mirror eating like it was their last meal

When I started my vacation in June I still came every day to feed these animals

Who I now have come to love so dearly and never dreaming they would ever trust another human again after what they had been through. The Rotweiler began wagging her tail at me when I would call out to her I didn’t expect that to happen then one day on my vacation a miracle happened both dogs came running to me one morning and started letting me pet them and started kissing me I was shocked and overwhelmed with Joy

Now I was thinking I had to get them off the streets the Shepherd was clearly pregnant

I could not bare to leave her there to have babies and try to protect them form other prey.

I called the antelope valley dog and cat rescue and Vilma the founder called me back right away. She asked that I come to the sanctuary to see it. When I arrived Vilma showed me around I liked what I saw Volunteers all working very hard cleaning feeding and walking all the animals. They are all very loving and very happy, However there was no room at the sanctuary there were no other kennels available I spoke with Vilma about the cost of adding another kennel Vilma immediately called her board then called to find the cost of a new kennel she decided somehow we could do it all I could do is cry.

Vilma said lets go save them dogs. I had no idea how we were going to do it but Vilma had a plan. The Shepherd was easy we just loaded her into the car the Rrotweiler was the tough one as soon as I put the collar on her she became a bucking bronco Vilma was prepared though she pulled a huge dog crate out of her car and we started reeling the dog into it. we got the 2 dogs to the sanctuary and put them into a fenced yard until their permanent site could be put together .when I arrived at the sanctuary the next day John and Dennis were working on the kennel and it was almost done I could not believe it all I knew is that this woman could work miracles she knew these dogs had to be saved that they had been through some tough times together scrounging for food water and shelter from the rain snow and now incredible heat. Eileen and Becca started putting up blankets to create a shade for the dogs. I had never met any of these people but they all jumped in to save the lives of these dogs. Everyday I go to the sanctuary to visit Bell and Bella and they still get excited when thy hear my car coming. I have named the Rotweiler Bella and the Shepherd Belle what more could an animal want than what this wonderful woman Vilma has provided them with they have found endless love and trust they would never have had it not been for the generous work of Vilma Drever of the Antelope Valley dog and cat rescue. I will be forever in debt to all these wonderful people who helped save Belle and Bella now Belle can have her puppies in a safe clean loving environment and when the time is right they can go to loving homes. This is the story I could only dream about, but Vilma made it happen. I have now been on vacation for three weeks and come to the sanctuary every day I am amazed at the never ending love and strength of this woman. Vilma is my hero and Angel on earth.

LEE AND LILLIAN JIMMENEZ CONTINUE THEIR SUPPORT

Lee and Lillian Jimenez adopted 2 of the dogs we rescued from the desert. They recently surprised us with a visit to our sanctuary and brought the dogs named Riley and Desi and also a generous donation. They also brought donations from their friends Steven Alpert and Stuart M Price. Our sincere thanks go to all of them.
